Wallet Passes built for BBQ Restaurant

Challenge

Weekend smoke sold out, but Tuesday and Wednesday tables sat empty. Regulars came for brisket once a month and forgot the weekday specials. Paper punch cards for a free sandwich were left in the car.

Strategy

Every ticket at the counter issued a Wallet Pass. Remaining punches and the next weekday plate lived on the pass. A push went out on quiet afternoons, and a birthday rib offer appeared the week of the guest’s date.

Implementation

Issuing at the pit

QR codes on the receipt and on the butcher paper issued the Wallet Pass after phone verification. The punch count from the POS wrote to the pass the same day.

Weekday plates

Guests who had not visited in 10 days received one push with that day’s plate. Frequency caps stopped more than two messages a week.

Birthday ribs

On the guest’s birthday week the pass showed a bone-in offer. Staff scanned the QR instead of asking for a paper coupon.

Results

Over 4 months in Austin:

  • Weekday covers. Tuesday–Wednesday covers rose by 22%.
  • Punch cards. 68% of active punches moved off paper.
  • Birthday offer. 21% of birthday pushes were redeemed in-house.

Conclusion

The restaurant kept the smoker and the POS. Wallet Passes replaced the paper punch and the forgotten weekday email, which is all a pit needs to fill the slow days.
