Wallet Passes built for Cinema

Challenge

Tickets lived in email. Guests arrived late to the queue, concession sales were weak on weekdays, and there was no reason to come back on a quiet Tuesday. Membership was a paper card that ushers rarely asked for.

Strategy

Every ticket became a Wallet Pass with showtime, screen, and a QR for entry. Two hours before the film, a push offered a concession combo. A separate stamp card on the same pass rewarded weekday visits. Members no longer needed a second card.

Implementation

Tickets in Wallet

After online payment, guests added the ticket to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Door staff scanned the QR on the pass. If a screening time changed, the pass updated and a push explained the new hour.

Pre-show concessions

A single push two hours before the film offered a drink and snack combo, valid only that evening. Guests could show the pass at the counter without a separate coupon code.

Weekday membership

Five weekday visits unlocked a free ticket on the pass. Weekend screenings did not count, so the mechanic filled the seats that needed filling. A monthly film-club push listed the next three midweek titles.

Results

During 4 months of programming:

  • Concession attach. Pre-show combo uptake lifted concession sales by 34%.
  • Weekday tickets. Midweek admissions grew by 18%.
  • Membership. 1,200 new Wallet memberships replaced the old paper cards.

Conclusion

Cinema tickets already belong in Wallet. Adding a concession offer and a weekday stamp on the same pass gave the independent cinema a loyalty tool that did not require a custom app or a plastic card at the door.
