Challenge

Paper stamp cards were lost, photocopied, or left at home. The chain could not tell who was close to a free coffee, and there was no way to invite a regular in when they walked past a quieter café. Morning traffic was strong; afternoons were slow.

Strategy

Stamp cards moved to Wallet Passes: nine coffees, the tenth free, with the live stamp count on the pass. A geo reminder fired when a cardholder came within 150 meters of a café they had not visited that day. Afternoon combos were pushed only to guests whose last visit was in the morning — so regulars were not spammed.

Implementation

Digital stamp cards

QR codes on the counter and on receipts issued the Wallet Pass. Each paid coffee added a stamp through the POS integration. The tenth stamp unlocked the free drink automatically on the pass.

Issuing at the till

Baristas asked new guests to scan once. Returning guests simply showed the QR on the pass. No plastic, no punch, no “I forgot my card”.

Geo reminders

Location messages were enabled for guests who opted in. If someone passed a café after 14:00 with an unused afternoon combo, they received one short push. Frequency caps stopped the same person getting more than two geo messages a week.

Results

In 4 months the chain saw:

Paper cards retired. 71% of active stamp cards moved to Wallet Passes.
Repeat visits. Guests with a pass came back 29% more often.
Geo offers. 14% of nearby pushes were redeemed the same day, mostly in the afternoon lull.

Conclusion

A coffee stamp card only works if it is on the phone the guest already unlocks. Wallet Passes kept the familiar “tenth coffee free” mechanic and added location, without asking anyone to install another café app.
