Wallet Passes built for Pharmacy

Challenge

Plastic loyalty cards stayed in kitchen drawers. Customers often came back later than planned for regular products, and over-the-counter attach rates were low because there was no timely, private reminder. The group needed a GDPR-friendly channel that was not another app.

Strategy

Customers received a Wallet Pass at the counter. The pass stored only loyalty points and a refill date the customer chose to save — not medical records. A push three days before the date, plus points for related OTC products, brought people back without printing another card.

Implementation

Counter issuance

A short form on a tablet issued the Wallet Pass after phone verification. Points from the existing loyalty program appeared on the pass the same day. Plastic cards were still accepted, but new customers were no longer given one.

Refill dates on the pass

Customers who wanted a reminder entered the next purchase date themselves. Passquare stored that date as a loyalty field, not as a prescription. The reminder could be turned off from the pass link at any time.

OTC offers

When points crossed a threshold, the pass showed a small extra on selected over-the-counter products. Pushes were factual and short — no health claims, only the bonus and the expiry date.

Results

After 6 months:

  • On-time returns. Customers with a saved refill date came back on time 32% more often.
  • OTC attach. Related over-the-counter products were added 15% more often at the till.
  • Plastic retired. 64% of active loyalty members moved off plastic cards.

Conclusion

The pharmacy kept medical data in its own systems. Wallet Passes carried only what a loyalty card should carry — points, a date the customer chose, and a quiet reminder — which is enough to bring people back without a new app.
